Cambodia & Laos Dec. - Jan 2006-07 : This was a five week trip on the BMW 650GS/Dakar. We entered Cambodia in the Northern sector just North of Anlong Veng. From there East across the top and then crossed back and headed South to Siem Reap and the temples of Angkor. From there we headed down to the southern bottom of Cambodia to the Viet Nam border. We then headed to the very north eastern sector of Cambodia and crossed into Laos.

In Laos we headed north up through the country and crossed back into Thailand in the top left corner by crossing the Mekong to home.

While riding in Southern Laos we attempted to stay as far to the easten edge along the Viet Nam border as possible.

China travels Oct. 2006 Planes, trains, buses and boats : This was a 4 week trip taken with our 8 year old son for his school holiday. We flew to Hanoi and then onto Beijing a few days later. From there we took the train across Northern China towards Lanzhou next to the Tibetan/China sector. From there we traveled South along this corridor into Southern China and onto where we could take the boat down the Mekong bordering along China, Burma and Laos. Eventually ending up just 50k from home - a short car ride.

Alakazzam a Phuket 8 meter : Alakazzam was designed for racing in the light air of Phuket. We painted her red on one side and yellow on the other. This boat was at time so much more fun to sail then Hocux due to the light air that is found in this part of Asia - and only a crew of 4-5 rather then the 12++ for Hocux.

Dersu - A custom 43 foot steel boat designed for high latitude sailing : Dersu was in Denmark and had been waiting for us for two years. She had previously sailed to Antarctica and our goal was upon retirement to take her back again. But then came along the Tsunami and damage to Hocux Pocux which curtailed our overseas travel plans a bit while she was being repaird back in Phuket. So to keep ourselves busy with some local travels we bought a bike and started to ride this part of Asia. I guess the rest is history; found the bike(s) to be as much fun as boats and also allowed us to stay closer to home and our son who is still in school.

Northern Laos Jan 08 Going places we missed before : We've ridden a couple of times in this area before, but wanted to go back and ride some of the back roads we had previously missed. some were on the map and some were not. The weather was a real mixed bag. This time of the year it is not supposed to rain, but this was not to be the case. Heavy fog, cold and some light drizzel was to be expected, but the Rain, made conditons in some places a bit more exciting then planned. And then there was also the flat tire - glad we carry spares and tools.

The last ride of 07 Back side of Chiang Rai. : Some of this road is on the map and some of it is not. Previously we had tried to ride coming from the other direction, but found the going too difficult in that we were riding our 1150GS. So we decided to give this area another go, but take the smaller 650. Great way to spend the last day of the year!!

Chiang Khong, The Kawi Sabai, (AKA The Farm) then and now 2007-2005 : We started this project June 2005 and finished October 2006. And today (22 Feb. 2007) I got busy and took some photos and then put them together with ones taken back when we first started. The property is 650 meters by 150 meters deep with a small lane on one side and a small stream on the other. The Mekong river is 300 meters away with the mountians of Laos in the background. We cut down over 180 trees and then planted over 200 new one. There are over 20 species of fruit trees. Too many varieties of flowering plants, shrubs and trees, plus many types of veggies, spices and herbs. Plus fish in the Big fish pond.

Building design was a 5 minute job on scratch paper on then getting some local carpenters the next day to start work. Everything was kinda like build and design as we go...

We hope you enjoy!

Cheers David and Mai

Laos trip December 2005 part one : We did this trip with our good friend David E. who lives in Chiang Mai. Primarily we did the roads in the very northern reaches of Laos, where we had not been able to go with our BMW1150RT road touring bike while riding in Laos last March. From our home here in Chiang Khong, on the Mekong River it was just a short ferry ride across the river and then off up into Northern Laos. From the Mekong River to the China border it is only, just over 200 kilometers. Most all the road construction in these photos are of the roads being built by the Chinese to access Laos down to the Mekong river crossing and then here into Thailand via a new bridge that will soon be under way.

Chiang Khong, The Kawi Sabai - The Happy Buffalo (AKA The Farm) November 2005 : With 650 meters of country lane frontage and an equal amount of creek frontage on the oposite side, by 160 meters deep, we've got a bit of space and work to do. After five months of work the guest house is built and land cleared for the larger house to follow in a few years, when maybe we are not traveling so much. Also constructed seven storage buildings for all the wood we cut down, plus we needed storage for tools and equipment, Laundry room for workers, etc. By Early January there should also be additional living quarters for four other persons, plus Thai style kitchen and outdoor coverd gathering area. While 180 trees were cleared to allow in some sun light and to cut out old growth trees, new trees were planted, giving us 18 different types of fruit trees with 150 lemon trees, veggie garden in, fish pond ready for filling of water and cat fish, teak trees planted and general lanscaping well underway. Irrigation system has beeb started and should be finished by early January. Now we'll let everything settle in a bit and in the late Spring do the final bits and pieces of landscaping, prior to the onset of the rainy season.

Up-date. 16 months later and we called it quits - for now. We build more later, but for now, it's time to travel. Will add more pics to this site once Spring is back.
